Concert Band

No prior experience is required to join Concert Band! It is a fantastic opportunity for those eager to learn a new instrument in a supportive environment. The program covers a wide range of instruments: brass (like trumpet and trombone), woodwinds (such as flute and saxophone), strings (including violin and cello), as well as percussion, guitar, and piano. Under the guidance of our dedicated instructors, students will explore the fundamentals of instrumental music and develop their instrumental skills.

Symphonic Band

Symphonic Band is tailored for musicians with at least one year of experience playing brass, woodwind, or percussion. Playing together in the Symphonic Band is not only about honing individual skills but also about learning the art of ensemble performance—understanding how individual parts weave together to create a cohesive whole. Throughout the year, Symphonic Band performs at numerous school and community events, offering a rich blend of musical and social experiences.

Wind Ensemble

Wind Ensemble is an audition-only performance ensemble that includes woodwinds, brass, and percussion instruments. The wind ensemble introduces the student to rigorous band literature of several styles and musical periods by composers of a variety of backgrounds. In addition to more advanced techniques, Wind Ensemble members are also provided with conducting, chamber and symphony orchestra opportunities. All Wind Ensemble musicians are strongly encouraged to take private lessons. 

String Orchestra

Orchestra offers the opportunity for string players to study and perform music of different styles and musical periods. We develop technique, cultivate leadership and nurture a passion for musical artistry. Students will have conducting opportunities and the ability to participate in a variety of chamber and ensemble experiences. At certain concerts, the string orchestra and wind ensemble combine to play as a full symphony orchestra. At least one year of experience on their instrument is recommended for String Orchestra

Jazz Ensemble

The Jazz Ensemble is an audition-only performance ensemble designed to offer the qualified instrumentalist the opportunity to study and perform a variety of jazz styles. There is an emphasis on improvisation, listening and sight-reading. As one of the more outwardly-facing ensembles, this group is involved in several performances throughout the community.

Pep Band

The pep band is composed of wind and percussion instrumentalists with the goal of showcasing spirit and pride on campus. Performance opportunities include various pep-rallies, community events and sporting events.

Pit Orchestra

The audition based Pit Orchestra performs the soundtrack for the Acalanes Spring Musical. The ensemble's instrumentation changes yearly to suit the musical's requirements. The Pit Orchestra performs professional-level repertoire and provides a unique experience for musicians.

Beginning Guitar

Beginning Guitar at Acalanes High School introduces students to the fundamentals of guitar through a balance of music literacy, appreciation, and hands-on playing. Students learn to read standard notation and guitar tablature while developing skills through both guitar ensemble and solo performance. Repertoire spans a variety of styles, including pop, rock, bluegrass, blues, jazz, and classical music, giving students a broad and engaging introduction to the instrument.
